Hanwha Aerospace Secures KRW 705.4 Billion Contract for L-SAM Mass Production 김대영 기자
Hanwha Aerospace announced on the 28th that it has signed a KRW 705.4 billion contract with South Korea’s Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) for the mass production of the Long-range Surface-to-Air Missile (L-SAM) system. Under the agreement, the company will deliver Anti-Ballistic Missiles (ABM) and launchers to the Republic of Korea Armed Forces through 2030.

A deployed configuration of the L-SAM launcher and the L-SAM Multi-Function Radar (MFR) Once deployed, the L-SAM will complete South Korea’s multi-layered missile defense architecture—joining the lower-tier Cheongung II and Patriot systems to form the upper-tier intercept layer of the Korean Air and Missile Defense (KAMD).

The ABM interceptor features several advanced technologies, including a Divert and Control System (DACS) enabling hit-to-kill interception at altitudes above 40 km, where aerodynamic control is no longer possible due to thin atmospheric density. The program also marks South Korea’s first application of a dual-pulse propulsion system—both technologies possessed by only a handful of nations worldwide.

The MFR is responsible for detecting, tracking, and classifying incoming ballistic missiles and aircraft, while simultaneously executing multiple target engagements and Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) missions.

Following the completion of L-SAM system development last year, the Agency for Defense Development (ADD) and industry partners including Hanwha Aerospace and Hanwha Systems have begun work on the next-generation L-SAM-II program—aimed at expanding South Korea’s air and missile defense coverage by three to four times.

A Hanwha Aerospace official stated, “By ensuring stable mass production of the L-SAM, we will strengthen the Republic of Korea’s air defense posture and actively pursue export opportunities based on the advanced technologies and expertise we have accumulated.”
