KAI Secures Philippine FA-50PH Upgrade Deal 김대영 기자 2025-12-26 13:43:11
SEOUL — KAI (Korea Aerospace Industries) announced on December 26 that it has signed a contract with the Department of National Defense of the Philippines to upgrade the operational capabilities of the Philippine Air Force’s FA-50PH light combat aircraft.

KAI said the upgrades will complement additional FA-50PH aircraft contracted earlier this year, bringing the total Philippine FA-50 fleet to 23 aircraft. The contract, valued at approximately KRW 93 billion (about USD 70 million), covers performance upgrades and follow-on logistics support for 11 FA-50PH aircraft delivered between 2015 and 2017. The modernization program will be implemented in phases through 2029.

Under the agreement, the FA-50PH fleet will gain enhanced precision-guided munitions capability, extended range and endurance, and improved sustained combat operations. The upgrade will also strengthen network-enabled and coalition warfare capabilities, significantly improving interoperability during joint and combined operations.

KAI said the upgrades will complement additional FA-50PH aircraft contracted earlier this year, bringing the total Philippine FA-50 fleet to 23 aircraft. Once fully upgraded, the aircraft are expected to play a central role in strengthening the Philippines’ airspace defense and air force modernization efforts.

Industry observers view the deal as a model of a virtuous capability enhancement cycle, in which initial aircraft exports are followed by tailored upgrades and long-term support based on real operational experience. The FA-50PH modernization reflects requirements derived directly from Philippine Air Force operational feedback, aimed at improving both combat effectiveness and mission efficiency.

Through the FA-50PH program, KAI has once again demonstrated its capability as a Total Solution Provider, covering the full aircraft life cycle from development and production to upgrades and long-term sustainment. In the global fighter market, lifecycle support and modernization—often accounting for two to five times the initial acquisition cost over a 30–40 year service life—are increasingly recognized as decisive factors in export competitiveness.

KAI has accumulated more than 15 years of Performance-Based Logistics (PBL) experience with the Republic of Korea Air Force’s KT/A-1, T-50, and Surion helicopter fleets, delivering higher availability rates and reduced operating costs. The company has also expanded its global sustainment footprint through programs such as the T-50IQ CLS program in Iraq, the FA-50PH PBL contract in the Philippines, and the KT-1B service life extension program in Indonesia.
