Seoul, Dec. 24 — LIG Nex1 has secured a major defense contract worth approximately KRW 1.56 trillion (about USD 1.15 billion) to develop the core electronic warfare (EW) systems for South Korea’s next-generation electronic warfare aircraft.

ROKAF’s Electronic Warfare Aircraft program plans to acquire a total of four aircraft, with two units procured under the Block-I phase this year and an additional two to be purchased later through the follow-on Block-II program. The company announced on Tuesday that it signed a system development contract with the Defense Acquisition Program Administration for the ROKAF's Electronic Warfare Aircraft (Block-I) program. Under the agreement, LIG Nex1 will complete system development by June 2034.

The program aims to field a large, specialized mission aircraft equipped with advanced electronic warfare mission systems capable of conducting electromagnetic operations.

These systems will collect and analyze threat signals from neighboring adversaries and, in wartime, execute electronic attacks such as jamming to disrupt or paralyze enemy air defense networks and wireless command-and-control systems.

Electronic warfare aircraft are considered a critical enabler in modern military operations. Typically deployed at the outset of hostilities, they are designed to blind and deafen adversary sensors, significantly improving the survivability and operational effectiveness of friendly air and joint forces.

With the growing importance of electromagnetic spectrum dominance in contemporary warfare, the Korean electronic warfare aircraft program is regarded as a key national defense initiative to strengthen the Republic of Korea’s high-end air combat and support capabilities.

“By mobilizing our company-wide capabilities, we will do our utmost to successfully complete this national-level project for the development of electronic warfare aircraft systems,” LIG Nex1 said in a statement.
